Benfica’s defender has split with the Portuguese side as the 23-year-old signed a six-year deal with Spanish champions Real Madrid whom the player is to join immediately. Jose Mourinho has thus marked his fifth move of the summer, the Special One being likely to sign at least one more player with Emmanuel Adebayor among the main favorites. Real has spent nearly 100 million euros so far this window transfer, the Portuguese joining former Bosrussia Dortmund’s Nuri Sahin, Bayern Munich Hamit Altintop, Lens Raphael Varante and Espenyol’s Callejon who is to return to Santiago Bernabeu this summer.

“Fabio Coentrao officially became Real Madrid’s latest signing by signing a six-season contract with the club after passing his medical. The left-back is solid in attack, has excellent dribbling skills, has a powerful shot and is extremely versatile, which allows him to play in any winger position,” the Spaniards’ statement read. Coentrao’s new deal with the Spanish league runners-up runs through the 2016 season, but the release clause wasn’t revealed. The Portuguese, who managed to reach the Europa League semi finals this season with Benfica, is expected to set new heights in Madrid, being likely to make his debut in the UEFA Champions League where Real will be struggling to clinch the trophy.
Coentrao packed from Benfica after a pretty good season in which he scored a couple of goals and gathered 23 selections. Apart from Portuguese’s move, Mourinho still hopes to sign Emmanuel Adebayor, too, though Manchester City haven’t made any offer to the Spaniards with whom the Togolese striker spent six months. Adebayor proved to fit Real Madrid as he finished the season with eight goals and 22 appearances, the 27-year-old player being also a key piece in Real’s team for UCL competition. But Carlos Tevez’s desire to depart from the Eastaldns side might lead to Adebayor’s return to Manchester though Roberto Mancini hasn’t shown any interest in bringing the forwarder back.
The Argentine is likely to split with City this summer as he also informed club’s chairman of his desire earlier this week. Manchester have signed two big names, including Gael Clichy and Stefan Savic of Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade whom he left for a four-season deal with the FA Cup winners. Jose Mourinho showed his interest to keep both Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema on Bernabeu for at least one more season. The Argentine signed the Spaniards back in 2007, having scored 69 goals in 127 appearances. The scored ten goals this past season, while Benzema, whp has signed Real last summer, managed to score ten goals in the 2010-11 season.
Real Madrid are to strengthen their team for the next season after failing to clinch the title. Jose Mourinho did manage instead to bring Real their first Copa del Rey trophy since 1993 in his first year on Bernabeu, while the UFA Champions League competition brought him just a semi final berth. The eventual champions FC Barcelona ousted them to remain the main favorites for the next term’s title.
