Den Haag thwart Gronigen in six-goal show

ADO Den Haag hit five goals past FC Groningen last night at the Kyocera stadium thanks to Toornstra’s hat-trick which buried the visitors alive in front of a 12,000 crowd. Toornstra opened the score in the 21st minute following a superb action which started in Den Haag’s half and included three passes. Radosavljevic fed the striker with a lovely pass to beat the keeper into the far right hand post from the edge of the box.

The first half found the hosts entering the locker-rooms with a minimal advantage. Christian Kum and Oluwafemi Ajilore were cautioned by the referee in the 19th minute for sins. Eight minutes into the second half, Toornstra completed his double after the first shot hit the post. The follow-up was put home by the forwarder to give the home side a two-goal lead. Groningen first reply came in the 64th minute through Joans Ivens who cu the deficit with a lovely header from Dusan Tadic’s cross from the right.

Visitors’ joy wouldn’t last but three minutes as Lex Immers made it 3-1 with a sensational shot from 20 yards out into the bottom corner past keeper Da Silva. Toornstra then completed even a hat-trick. A poor defending allowed the Den Haag striker to put it in through the keeper’s legs from close range. So, three goals were scored within eight minutes. Finally, Ramon Leeuwin had the last word on Kyocera, giving the hosts a comfortable win in the 85th minute. The midfielder made it 5-1 with a 20-yard screamer through the keeper’s hands who deflected the ball into the own.

Den Haag have finished the season with 16 wins, 12 defeats and six draws, gathering 54 points in 34 games. On the other side, Groningen failed to climb fourth, losing their 11th match of the season. Pieter Huistra’s side won 57 points 19 of which on the road. ADO Den Haag made two changes last night, introducing Kevin Visser for Frantisek Kubik in the 90th minute and Mike van Duinen for Jens Toornstra, the last move being made in order to bring a standing ovation for the hat-tricker. As for Groningne, they used three substitutions. Coach Huistra replaced Maikel Kieftenbeld with Virgil van Dijk in trhe 46th minute, Petter Andersson with Tim Matavz in the 70th and Oluwafemi Ajilore with Shkodran Metaj with nine minutes left.
