Barcelona’s former captain Josep Guardiola accepted the club’s contract renewal offer for another season. His former deal was due to expire this summer and the Spanish manager was touted to leave for Italy or England, but he signalled his intentions of remaining with the Catalan club until next summer by renewing his deal until June 2012. Guardiola will sign the contract in the following days, according to the club’s official website.
Guardiola took over the management at Barcelona in the summer of 2008, replacing Frank Rijkaard after two seasons without a trophy. His only former managerial experience was the year spent at Barcelona B, team he guided to promotion. However, once Guardiola signed for Barcelona as a Manager, things went into a different direction. The Spanish club started to play an extremely attractive and successfull football and the club went on breaking record after record. He won 99 points with Barcelona in the 2009-2010 season (former record: Real Madrid – 1996/1997 – 92 points), 35 consecutive games in which his team scored (former record: Real Madrid – 2001/2002 – 27 games) and won 16 consecutive games in La Liga (former record: Real Madrid – 1960/1961 – 15 games) among other impressive stats.
Guardiola won back-to-back championships in the last two years and his team is odds-on favourite to do it again in 2011. He won Champions League once and brought into the club’s trophy room the first Club World Championship ever. With Guardiola on the bench the Spanish club enjoyed a successfull period and the club is touted as continuing the reign over La Liga and to bring another Champions League trophy soon. Guardiola is also close to another trophy, the Spanish Cup, when his side will meet rivals Real Madrid in the Final in April.
