Serie A opening day review

One of the most important football competition in the world, Serie A, opened the gates for the fans again this August. With all the teams in action, there were onyl 15 goals scored, the most spectacular game being on San Siro, between Milan and Lecce, with the rossoneri smashing the newly promoted team 4-0. Pato twice, Thiago Silva and Inzaghi once showed how much Milan wants to change this season. Led by Massimiliano Allegri from the bench, the team looked confident throughout the whole game and with the addition of Ibrahimovic (and maybe Robinho), the team’s offensive line may look better than ever.

Pundits suggested Internazionale Milano will do it this year too, but their start was not so good. With Rafa Benitez leading the team in his first Serie A game, Inter drew Bologna 0-0 away and let everybody think again who they consider the favourite team to clinch the title. The first half was very bad and only the second half performance almost pleased the fans, but Inter didn’t managed to put the ball past Emiliano Viviano, and it ended goalless. AS Roma won only one point against Cesena, in Rome, after a not so impressive game. The game between Palermo and Cagliari also ended goalless.

The surprise came from Bari, where the newly promoted team won 1-0 against Del Neri’s Juventus, after a goal by Massimo Donati, former AC Milan midfielder. Sampdoria won 2-0 against Lazio, with Cassano and Guberti scoring, while Parma also won 2-0 against Brescia. Transfer wonder Genoa won away against Udinese, after a late goal by Mesto. Fiorentina drew Napoli 1-1, after a game with two red cards, and Chievo beat Catania 2-1.

The opening day was not very impressive, but there were some surprises. No one expected AS Roma, Inter and Juventus to do so bad, while not so many expected AC Milan to have such a fly-highing start of campaign. I bet this year the league is going to be more interesting, especially with Ibra now in Milan’s squad. If the rossoneri will be able to bring Robinho too, then there is definitely going to be difficult for other teams to keep the same pace as the Red Devils.
